The world's first protest against insect farming

Join us on Wednesday 5th August at 10:30am for the world's first anti-insect farming protest.
The Dutch company Protix runs the world’s largest insect farm located in the Netherlands, raising and killing hundreds of billions of black soldier fly larvae, many of which are fed to salmon and shrimp on aquafarms, making insect farming an added layer to animal farming, rather than a substitute.
The good news is that they seem to be running out of money. They have already fired many of their staff, their plan to build a big insect factory together with US meat giant Tyson Foods has failed, and they had to raise emergency funding last summer to sustain operations. They will need another bailout between now and the end of this year to avoid shutting down.
In May 2026, the Stockholm Environment Institute, one of the world's most cited independent environmental research institutes, released a damning report called Rethinking insects as alternative protein, which debunks most of the industry's claims and concludes the industry "frequently falls short of its theoretical promise". It says insects are not being fed waste, that they are not functioning as a meat replacement, that the environmental footprint claims don’t add up, that insect farming is a biodiversity and ecological risk and that there are emerging animal welfare concerns. InvestNL is an investment fund of the Dutch, funded by taxpayer money. It is one of the key investors that Protix will likely be seeking rescue funding from them (this will be confirmed over the next week) as they have been one of their main investors and own a large share of the company.
Our message is simple: side with the science and don't fund insect farming.
The purpose of the protest is to show that this is an issue which real people, with actual faces, care about and it’s not just a few keyboard warriors, demonstrating this to investors, the media and the Dutch national government. The goal is for 20-40 people to take part in the protest.
This is a model of one-off protest on an issue what was previously fringe has worked well in the past, for example, for example recently in the UK there was a protest targetting the supermarket Iceland about shrimp welfare. There was a one-off 70-person protest outside Iceland, leading to media coverage, the CEO posting about it on LinkedIn, and ultimately Iceland making their shrimp welfare commitment one month later. Numbers do make a difference - the more real people with real faces, the stronger the signal to investors, media and politicians.
