Event Description

During the mayoral election, Zohran Mamdani repeatedly promised to tackle New York City’s affordability crisis. One of his signature campaign promises was to make buses free. We argue that making buses free does little to make New York more affordable. Bringing down housing costs, a household’s largest expense, is the central problem we need to attack. In order to create more housing and reduce rents, we propose dedicating the $1 billion a year it will cost to make buses free to build new subways.

Join us for a presentation of “A Better Billion: Expanding Transit and Housing for a More Affordable New York,” the planning and vision report from NYU Marron’s Transportation and Land Use program. The report outlines a data-driven strategy to plan for long-term, continuous subway expansion while leveraging the City of Yes zoning amendments to support housing production near expanded service areas.

About the NYU Marron Institute of Urban Management

The NYU Marron Institute conducts innovative applied research, working with cities to take on critical challenges of urban living. Started with a generous gift from Donald B. Marron, faculty members develop their programs, hire research staff and build portfolios of externally-funded projects that have the potential to improve outcomes in cities. Currently, the Marron Institute has six major research programs focused on urban planning, environmental health, civic analytics, transportation and land use, human trafficking, and public sector performance and innovation.

Globally, cities are home to more than half of the world’s population—4 billion people and growing. Though the researchers and faculty members at the Marron Institute do publish and teach on occasion, their chief focus is the pursuit of sponsored research that will extend the impact of the Institute’s founding gift and have a positive and measurable impact on life in cities the world over.
