The Writer’s Blocc: Familial Folklore
For this Writer’s Blocc special, we’re exploring familial folklore: the stories passed down through our families that tell us where we come from, shape how we see the world and sometimes give us the wisdom to understand where we’re going.
From stories about migration and determination to family traditions, childhood memories and lessons passed down through generations, we’re interested in the little things that make up our personal histories.
We’ll begin with conversations about the stories that have stayed with us, before exploring the importance of self-publishing and the role we play in preserving and sharing our own histories.
Then, we’ll get creative.
Using old magazines, books, paper and other materials, you’ll transform a personal or inherited story into a mini zine, experimenting with words, images and collage to create something entirely your own.
What to expect:
Conversations about family stories, memories and personal histories.
An introduction to zines and the power of self-publishing.
A creative writing exercise to distil your chosen story into a few words.
A hands-on zine-making session using collage and mixed media.
An opportunity to share your creation and connect with other creatives.
You don’t need to consider yourself a writer or an artist to participate. Just bring a story, a memory or a little curiosity.
Come ready to remember, create and connect. ✍🏾
