Out In Climate [Bioblitz & Picnic]

​Come spend a couple of hours outside with the Out In Climate LA Chapter at Amir’s Garden in Griffith Park! Tucked away in the hills, Amir's Garden is a vibrant, hand-planted oasis built and maintained by volunteers, featuring shaded trails, lush foliage, beautiful views, and plenty of local wildlife. We'll do a bioblitz (a relaxed group hunt to photograph and log as many wild plants, birds, and bugs as we can find), then hang out for a brunch picnic under the shade.

​Zero nature knowledge needed! A bioblitz just means recording living things with a free app (iNaturalist) that IDs them for you. Every sighting feeds a real global biodiversity database that scientists actually use. If you can take a photo, you're fully qualified.

​Why we're doing it: even in the middle of urban SoCal, there's a whole living ecosystem worth paying attention to, and community science is one of the most joyful on-ramps to local climate and conservation work. It's also a great excuse to be outside and meet new folks.

​The plan

• ​9:00 · Meet in the Mineral Wells Parking Lot (at the intersection of Griffith Park Dr and Mineral Wells Rd), grab a name tag, get the app set up

• ​9:15 · Head up to Amir's Garden together and wander at a relaxed, photograph pace

• ​10:15 · Regroup and tally species

• ​10:30 · Settle in at Amir's Garden for a brunch picnic, done by ~11:30

​Bring

• ​A charged phone (please download iNaturalist before you come; details below!)

• ​Water, sunscreen, a hat, comfy shoes (note: the walk up to the garden involves a short uphill trail!)

• ​[optional] A picnic blanket and something tasty to share, brunch-potluck style (optional but so encouraged)

• ​[optional] Binoculars (some birds can be elusive)

​Good to know

• ​Meeting Location: Park at the Mineral Wells Parking Lot (at Griffith Park Dr & Mineral Wells Rd). We will all meet here first and walk up to the garden together.

• ​Come for all of it or just part, no pressure

• ​Reusable name tags will be provided

• ​Please note that dogs are not allowed inside Amir's Garden, so leave the pups at home for this one

• ​Alcohol isn't allowed in the park picnic areas, so we're keeping it dry
