【台灣季 · 在世界之間】第二站來到舊金山。
舊金山站的第一場活動，邀請到長期研究中國、台灣與亞洲近代歷史的學者 Jeffrey Wasserstrom（華志堅）。

他去年出版的 The Milk Tea Alliance（中譯《奶茶聯盟》，衛城出版），以近年亞洲各地青年運動之間的跨境連結為切入點，串起台灣、香港、泰國與緬甸等地的民主運動。這些地方都有各自不同的歷史背景與政治處境，但在一次次社會運動中，年輕世代透過網路、文化與公共討論彼此聲援，也讓「奶茶聯盟」成為跨越國界的民主想像與團結象徵。

然而，這樣的跨境連結並非憑空出現，而是建立在更長的亞洲近代歷史之上。

本場講座將從《奶茶聯盟》所提出的問題出發，回望過去120年間東亞與東南亞的歷史變遷，討論民主化、社會運動、性別關係，以及全球城市的興起如何共同形塑亞洲各地的社會發展。透過中國、日本、香港、泰國與台灣之間的相互比較，我們也將重新理解亞洲不同地方如何彼此影響，而非各自發展。

自1990年代以來，民主政治、社會運動，或性別平權等議題上，台灣也逐漸成為亞洲的重要參照，也不斷豐富亞洲的敘事。

在「台灣季 · 在世界之間」，我們希望從亞洲而非單一國家的視角重新閱讀台灣，思考台灣如何既受到亞洲歷史的塑造，也持續參與著亞洲未來的形成。

​Taiwan Across Cities arrives in San Francisco for its second stop.

​The first event in San Francisco features Jeffrey Wasserstrom, a historian whose work focuses on modern China, Taiwan, and Asian history.

​His recent book, The Milk Tea Alliance (published in Chinese by Acropolis Publish), takes the cross-border connections among youth movements across Asia as its starting point, tracing the democratic movements of Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Myanmar. While each place has its own distinct historical background and political circumstances, successive waves of social movements have seen younger generations supporting one another through online networks, culture, and public discussion. In this sense, the “Milk Tea Alliance” has become a symbol of democratic solidarity and imagination that transcends national borders.

​Yet these cross-border connections did not emerge overnight. They are rooted in a much longer history of modern Asia.

​Drawing on the questions raised in The Milk Tea Alliance, this talk looks back over the past 120 years of change in East and Southeast Asia, exploring how democratization, social movements, gender relations, and the rise of global cities have shaped societies across the region. By comparing the historical experiences of China, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Taiwan, Jeffrey Wasserstrom invites us to see how these places have continuously influenced one another, rather than developing in isolation.

​Since the 1990s, Taiwan has increasingly become an important point of reference in Asia through its democratic development, social movements, and advances in gender equality, while also enriching the narratives through which Asia understands itself.

​Through Taiwan Across Cities, we hope to revisit Taiwan from an Asian perspective rather than through the lens of a single nation, and to consider how Taiwan has been shaped by the histories of Asia while continuing to play a part in shaping the region’s future.
