Raskolnikov is a destitute former student living in the slums of St. Petersburg. Convinced that extraordinary men are permitted to break ordinary moral rules, he murders a pawnbroker and, when her sister walks in on him, kills her too. What follows is a slow unraveling: guilt, fever, and a cat-and-mouse game with the detective who suspects him almost from the start, until he confesses to a young woman he comes to love and turns himself in. This edition uses Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky's translation, revised in 2021 for Dostoevsky's bicentennial.
