Alpha School, AI and the Reinvention of Education: A Conversation with Joe Liemandt & Michael Horn
MA AI Coalition — Education Series
Alpha School, AI and the Reinvention of Education
The Massachusetts AI Coalition opens its Education Series with a question most institutions would rather avoid: what happens when someone actually rebuilds school from first principles — and it works?
Joe Liemandt built Alpha School around AI-powered mastery learning, condensed academics, and the radical idea that children should spend half their day learning things that matter beyond the test. Michael Horn, Harvard GSE faculty and author of Disrupting Class, has spent two decades studying why education resists change. Rags Gupta will moderate.
The conversation will be direct: where AI is genuinely improving outcomes, where it isn't, and the uncomfortable questions around incentives, staffing, accountability, and screens that polite panels tend to skip.
