Going fossil-fuel free in Family Matters' vintage Rogers Park 3-flat

​Join Family Matters for an intimate conversation and tour of our sustainability projects as we work to be fossil fuel free by 2030. Established as a demonstration project for vintage Chicago 3-flat apartment buildings, Family Matters has replaced gas-powered systems with energy-efficient electric and heat pump models, upgraded our electrical system, installed solar panels, implemented composting practices, replaced chemical rodent control with an outdoor "working cat" colony, and much more. Learn about how our work can can be replicated across similar Chicago buildings.

Family Matters is a youth development and community leadership nonprofit located in the North of Howard area of Chicago's Rogers Park community. Since 1987, we have partnered with youth, families, and communities to cultivate a way of living in the world that develops strong relationships, meaningful communication, and safe environments for courageous social change. We seek to build an equitable society for all.

​Accessibility information: Weather permitting, this event will partially take place outdoors in our fenced back yard. The grass yard is accessible either via 1) two shallow steps from our front sidewalk to our side gate, with either stairs or an ADA ramp to enter the back yard or 2) via a ramp from the alley. Chairs without arms, rated for 300+ lbs, will be arranged in the yard. The tour portion of the program will involve climbing stairs, as all levels of Family Matters' vintage 3-flat have stairs. Masks are available. We have two outdoor tuxedo cats, Paka and Luna, who may hang out in the backyard during the event. With advanced notice, headsets can be provided for AI-generated simultaneous interpretation into languages other than English or into written English via an app downloaded onto guests' phones.
