Fire & Spirit: Somatic Movement and Dance
*This event is a part of a three part Somatic Nourishment series centring Black African Diasporic women and gender expansive beings: Sun/Feb 15: Ancestral Hands | Sun/Feb 22: Self-Expression & Creativity. (Attend separately or all three)
Fire illuminates the portal between worlds—the threshold where we meet our ancestors, where their power becomes our power, where their warmth flows through us as we move forward.
In this somatic movement and dance practice, we invite connection to ancestors as ecological relationships; ancestors of kin, affinity, land, elements, and all beloved energies to collaborate with fire as our teacher and guide. Fire as the flame that lights the path to the ancestral realm. Fire as the sun's warmth. Fire as the energy and power our ancestors hold for us. Through gentle, guided movement, we alchemize the blessings, gifts, and tools they've passed down—honouring their wisdom while carrying it forward in our own bodies, our own lives.
This practice weaves fire with the balance of all elements—earth grounding us, water flowing through us, air moving with us. Together, we create an embodied alchemy that transforms ancestral reverence into present action, reaching back through time to move ourselves forward.
Through somatic movement and dance, you'll have the opportunity to:
Connect with fire as portal, warmth, and ancestral / energetic power
Call in ancestral / energetic blessings and receive their gifts
Move in rhythm with elemental balance and harmony
Alchemize ancestral wisdom through your body
Honour the past while embodying your path forward
Express yourself through gentle, guided movement and dance
Who This Practice Welcomes
This practice is a part of a series centring Black African Diasporic women and gender expansive beings, offering sacred space for those living at the intersections of anti-Black racism and gender-based oppression. Perhaps you are drawn to ancestral / energetic connection, embodied movement, or the elemental wisdom of fire. You might be seeking to alchemize your ancestral gifts and tools, curious about somatic alchemy in general, or called to move with intention and reverence.
No previous experience with movement, dance, or somatic practice is needed. All movements are adaptable and can be explored seated, standing, or lying down. Resting is always an option. Your body's wisdom guides the practice, and all your choices are honoured.
