What if the serious work of creating impact could benefit from a little more play?

Across education, advocacy, community engagement, training and development, nonprofits, foundations and social enterprises are constantly looking for new ways to engage people, communicate ideas and inspire participation. Games, play and playful design offer another way to think about how those experiences can be created — not by making serious issues less serious, but by inviting people to interact with them differently.

Organized by Games for Change Hong Kong, this hands-on session builds on its role as a cross-sector platform bringing together the games industry, educators, researchers, nonprofits, social innovators and other changemakers around games as a meeting point and vehicle for impact. Following the conversations and connections sparked through the Games for Change Hong Kong Festival, this session shifts the question from “What can games and play make possible?” to “How might we start putting those possibilities into practice?”

Co-presented by Press Start Studios and One Bite Design Studio, the session brings together complementary perspectives from game and experience design, spatial and multimedia design, placemaking, public engagement and social innovation. Through approachable local case studies, playful activities and collaborative exercises, participants will explore how principles from games and play can help create experiences that encourage curiosity, participation, connection and action.

Using a simple See → Play → Design framework, participants will first discover how playful design is already being used in different impact contexts, experience some of these ideas for themselves, and then begin applying them to challenges and opportunities from their own organizations.

Designed as an accessible introduction rather than a technical masterclass, the session is for nonprofits, foundations, social enterprises and others working across the impact sector who are curious about gamification and playful design but may not know where to begin. No game design or design experience is required — just a willingness to play, explore and imagine new possibilities for impact.

Target Audience & Language: This session is designed primarily for NGOs and social enterprises. The session will be conducted primarily in Cantonese, with English support available where needed.
