A Community Conversation on mCDR: Cultivating Trusted Collaboration Across Industry & Academia Workshop
Join us for a roundtable workshop on marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR): Cultivating Trusted Collaboration Across Industry and Academia. This event, hosted by California Ocean Science Trust, Carbon180, and COMPASS Science Communication, is focused on creating opportunities for reciprocal learning and identifying practical approaches for cross-sector collaboration to strengthen the production and application of trusted mCDR science. Set against the backdrop of California’s world-class academic institutions and the Bay Area’s private sector hub, the event will bring together participants from academic research labs, scientific organizations, mCDR startups, private sector partners, and others to engage in roundtable dialogue. By building relationships across sectors early and consistently, rather than when a specific project or partnership calls for it, the event aims to build a stronger foundation of trust between researchers, practitioners, and industry experts.
Goals & Outcomes:
Serve as a continued forum at major scientific gatherings to bring together researchers, practitioners, and other knowledge holders to address scientific challenges in mCDR.
Identify shared research priorities between academic and private sector partners to accelerate the production and application of trusted mCDR science
Formulate science-driven approaches and actions to advance cross-sectional mCDR research collaboration, addressing community-wide needs.
Cultivate ongoing, cross-sector relationships that extend beyond this convening to lay the foundation of trust for future collaboration and before specific projects require it.
Please join us after for a mCDR Mixer immediately following the workshop at the Aquarium of the Bay, where participants can continue the conversation and engage with a broader community of ocean science researchers, practitioners, and leaders attending AGU26. Over drinks and small bites, attendees are encouraged to meet individuals outside of their typical sectors and continue cross-sector dialogues throughout the week-long meeting.
A Community Conversation on mCDR Science is a joint effort by COMPASS Science Communication, California Ocean Science Trust, and Carbon180 to engage a broader ocean science community on the rapidly evolving field of marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). Informed by the outcomes and feedback from a Community Conversation at the 2026 Ocean Sciences Meeting, this event will focus on strengthening coordination and collaboration across academic and private sector research at the 2026 AGU Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA.
