The Mattering Instinct

A conversation with Dr. Rebecca Goldstein

Modern societies are increasingly losing the ability to disagree constructively. Political, philosophical, and ideological divisions have deepened, and meaningful dialogue has become harder to sustain.

In this session, philosopher and author Dr. Rebecca Goldstein introduces the ideas behind her book The Mattering Instinct. At the center is a deeply human need: the need to feel that our lives, ideas, and perspectives matter.

When this instinct is ignored or threatened, conversations break down. When it is acknowledged, even strong disagreement can become productive and meaningful.

Drawing on philosophy and psychology, Goldstein offers a framework for understanding both ourselves and those we most disagree with — and why this ability is increasingly important for leaders today.

In this session we will explore:

• Why societies are losing the ability to disagree constructively
• The idea of the mattering instinct
• How recognizing this instinct can transform difficult conversations
• Why leaders play an important role in restoring meaningful dialogue

The session will consist of a 40 minute keynote followed by a short Q&A.
