About the guest speaker:
Dr. John Chia, a distinguished medical oncologist, and his wife, Dr. Cheryl Loh, a psychiatrist, have been collecting contemporary art in Singapore for over 20 years. Their collection, comprising around 300 works, reflects a deep engagement with Southeast Asian art that is both conceptually driven and socially reflective.
Their journey began in their youth, influenced by peers in the Art Elective Program at National Junior College. Over time, their collection has evolved, focusing on works that address themes such as civic life, social justice, labor politics, human rights, and nationhood.
Dr. Chia and Dr. Loh are celebrated for their discerning eye and intellectual engagement with art. They are among a new generation of collectors who prioritize conceptual depth over commercial appeal, fostering a more reflective and inclusive art culture in Singapore. Their collaboration with mentor Yeap Lam Yang in the exhibition Two Houses: Politics and Histories exemplifies their commitment to expanding the reach of contemporary artists' practices beyond traditional galleries .
