About Event

What does inclusive urbanism look like in practice?

Visit Conradie Park to learn about a new model for contemporary city-making in South Africa. Developed on a former hospital site in the heart of Cape Town's urban core, the precinct brings together mixed-income housing, public space, active mobility networks, social infrastructure and everyday amenities in a neighbourhood designed around walkability rather than sprawl. Led by the architects and urban designers who conceived the precinct's design, this Design Week South Africa tour offers a chance to examine how design, policy and development can be levers for a more compact, integrated and socially diverse urban precinct.

This tour is part of the UNBUILT programme, sponsored by dhk Architects.

Why Conradie Park matters

  • It is one of South Africa's first large-scale mixed-income, mixed-tenure developments, integrating social housing, affordable housing and open-market housing in a single precinct.

  • It repurposes well-located public land to address spatial inequality and reduce the distance between housing, jobs and services.

  • It demonstrates a live-work-play-learn model with schools, retail, green spaces and community facilities integrated into the masterplan.

  • Its urban design prioritises walkability, public space and active mobility, offering an alternative to conventional suburban development patterns.

  • It is increasingly being viewed as a model that could inform future precinct development elsewhere in South Africa.
