Making Degrowth Happen: The What, How, and Why for Climate Advocates
Degrowth is an economic and social movement that aims to equitably transition our economy to a safe and steady state that operates within ecological limits while enabling human flourishing. Its proponents argue that societies should stop pursuing infinite growth as a main policy goal, because constant growth has brought the planet dangerously close to crossing ecologically devastating thresholds, and eventually has diminishing returns on human well-being. Excessive consumption is already causing us to risk catastrophe by crossing some of these thresholds, including climate change, and we need to bring our economies in line with Earth’s biocapacity in order to minimize these risks.
Degrowth addresses the primary barrier to solving global environmental problems by calling on high-income countries, communities, and individuals to rein in their consumption and production emissions to fair-shares of a global carbon budget.
In this event, we will explore how to operationalize degrowth with speakers who will address it through the lenses of finance, degrowth metrics and GDP, and advocacy and organizing. The event will consist of a panel followed by breakout and networking exercises.
