Is Electrifying the Western Cape’s Public Transport Network Enough?
The shift to electric public transport is already underway in the Western Cape, with new electric buses, charging infrastructure and growing interest in how different parts of the transport system can make the transition.
As part of October Transport Month, Young Urbanists and the Active Mobility Forum are bringing together people working across government, public transport operations and transport economics to ask what electrification should actually achieve.
The discussion will look at electric buses, charging infrastructure, operating costs and the role of projects such as MyCiTi Phase 2A and Golden Arrow Bus Services, while also asking a bigger question: how does electrification help build a more connected and integrated public transport network across Cape Town and the Western Cape?
The discussion will include perspectives from the City of Cape Town, Golden Arrow Bus Services, transport economists and other public transport stakeholders.
Organised by the Active Mobility Forum as part of October Transport Month 2026.
