Why Voters Select Polarized Candidates in US Elections
🇺🇸 Why are American politicians becoming more polarized—and why do voters keep choosing them?
Join us at Wave Collective for a talk with David Broockman, political scientist and Director of the Berkeley Center for American Democracy, whose groundbreaking research challenges conventional wisdom about polarization in U.S. politics.
Drawing on one of the largest election studies of its kind—a four-wave panel survey of over 30,000 voters across 27 congressional districts—David reveals how voters make choices in primaries versus general elections, and why polarization thrives. He shows that while voters do care about issues and endorsements, primary elections present a unique challenge: without clear partisan cues to distinguish candidates, voters struggle to identify who actually represents their views.
The result? A system that makes it harder for voters to choose the candidates they prefer, fueling the rise of polarized politicians. In this lecture, David will unpack these dynamics, showing how endorsements, voter learning, and party reputations shape the future of American democracy. 🗳️✨
