The Secret Ingredient Writer's Salon: Sight
Five senses. Five sessions. One story only you can tell.
Week 4 of our sensory journey explores the sense of sight—the images, gestures, colors, and visual details that shape what we remember and how we understand it.
The Secret Ingredient Writer’s Salon is for essayists and memoirists ready to let themselves back into their own story.
This session may be attended on its own or as part of the five-week salon.
SESSION 4: SIGHT
Our memories come to life in images.
A particular shade of blue. A cracked screen. The first glimpse of a city skyline from a plane window. A child’s eyelashes. A weathered suitcase waiting by the door. Certain details stay with us because of the emotional truth they hold.
On days that I take the train to Coney Island and catch my first glimpse of the Cyclone, I can see my dad’s face animate as he tells stories about working as a ticket taker at Luna Park when he was a kid. I remember being captivated by the moment, while also living vicariously through his past.
We’ll explore what captures our attention when we reminisce, and how the right visual detail can place a reader right there beside us.
