About Event

Save El Jardin de Santa Cecilia (FKA Sunset Garden)! Come through to this Saturday to gather in solidarity, learn how to support the garden, envision a better future of community controlled land, and make rosewater from the abundance of roses in bloom right now! This will also be a potluck - bring something to share if you can. But all are welcome no matter what. AFP has a mandatory masking policy, so we'll keep food in the back room with doors open, and folks can take off masks to eat and drink.

Optional meet at @newrootsqueens beforehand, from 1:30-3pm to gather roses and do a bit of land tending.

Jardin de Santa Cecilia is magical community garden in Ridgewood that has been under attack by transphobic, Zionist neighbors for cultivating a safe space for trans folks and pro-pali gatherings. These neighbors have managed to pressure the city's Parks Dept. to threaten the garden with eviction after the gardeners refused to remove an altar to trans icon Cecilia Gentili, and then after they refused to remove Zionism from their definition of hate speech.

Green Thumb has a little known clause in their contract with all community gardens that the parks commissioner can close any garden at any time for any reason without having to explain why, and with no opportunity to appeal. This clause leaves ample space for this mayorally appointed position to punish gardeners for their politics. This fight is to save Santa Cecilia AND to abolish this dangerous clause that flies in the face of free speech.
