Who Owns the Means of Making at the Co-op Social Club
94 Green Street has been a cooperative home for over 30 years. Hear first-hand the story of the now-closed Red Sun Press in a retrospective of the worker co-op from Paul Normandia, long-time worker owner, in the newly opened Co-op Social Club. Alongside Ellie Tiglao, Miriam Gee, and Declan Keefe from CoEverything, a community-driven architecture and develCreative activism needs infrastructure. Posters need a press. Artists need studios. Organizers need a room with the lights on. Someone has to own those things and keep them running, and that work is harder and far less visible than what it makes possible.
For roughly fifty years, that infrastructure at 94 Green Street was Red Sun Press, a worker-owned, unionized shop that printed for Boston's movements. Red Sun has retired and sold the building to CoEverything, a cooperative architecture and community development firm, which opened Coop Social Club on the ground floor.
Three cooperatives that hold this kind of infrastructure share the session, from three points along the same arc. El activismo creativo necesita infraestructura. Los pósteres necesitan una imprenta. Les artistas necesitan talleres. Les organizadores necesitan un espacio con las luces encendidas. Alguien tiene que ser dueño de esas cosas y mantenerlas en funcionamiento, y ese trabajo es más difícil y mucho menos visible que lo que resulta gracias a su existencia.
Durante aproximadamente cincuenta años, esa infraestructura en el 94 de Green Street fue Red Sun Press, un taller sindicalizado y cooperativa de trabajadores que imprimía para los movimientos de Boston. Red Sun ha cesado y vendió el edificio a CoEverything, una empresa cooperativa de arquitectura y desarrollo comunitario, que abrió el Coop Social Club en la planta baja.
