About the host

This hackathon is co-hosted by Liquid AI, an MIT spin-off developing efficient foundation models from small to large scale, and Weights & Biases Japan, the Japan arm of the globally trusted MLOps/LLMOps platform accelerating machine learning and generative AI development. Together, we aim to empower developers in Japan to experiment, fine-tune, and build next-generation applications with cutting-edge AI tools and resources.

Challenges

The LFM family is the strongest library of Small Language Models (SLMs) built for fast, private, and on-device inference. These models already shine across applications like:

But here’s the twist: SLMs only reach their full potential when fine-tuned for a specific task or workflow.

💡 Recently, Liquid AI released LFM2-350M-ENJP-MT, a compact 350M parameter model that — after targeted fine-tuning — achieved frontier-level translation performance, rivaling models 10× larger.

In this Hackathon, we would like to see..

  • Theme: Can you take a model from the LFM family and push it beyond its limits?

    • Pick a Japanese task/workflow/use case that can bring in real-impact

    • Fine-tune or adapt an LFM model for that task/workflow/use case

    • Showcase measurable improvements over the base model

  • Team Size: 1–3 people

  • Submission Package:

    • A model checkpoint + data tracked on Weights & Biases

    • A short 2–4 slide deck explaining your task, approach, and results

  • Format:

    • A proof-of-concept model

    • Or a polished demo / application built on top of your fine-tuned model

(Function Calling)

    • Weights & Biases

    • PoC(Proof-of-Concept)
