ROA$T GROWTH: Alternative Comedy for Alternative Economics
The economy is famously a hilarious subject. So we were confused why no one (to our knowledge) has produced an economy-themed comedy night in Toronto yet. Weird.
roa$t growth is a comedy night dedicated to roasting our cultural obsession with GDP, productivity, scale, and the holy line that must always go up.
We’ll feature amateur comedians who are professional degrowthers, and professional comedians who are amateur degrowthers.
Daylighting the invisible hand and making GDP cringe.
Because if we’re going to rethink the economy, we might as well have fun doing it :)
Who is this event for?
If you’ve ever:
Wondered why collective wellbeing is measured in dollars
Felt suspicious of the phrase “human capital”
Questioned why “the economy” sounds like a deity we must appease
Cared about climate change, burnout, inequality, or your rent
Or simply sensed that infinite growth on a finite planet... doesn't make much sense
This night is for you!
No prior knowledge of degrowth required. Just bring your curiosity and a willingness to laugh.
Where does the money go?
After covering event costs and paying our artists, all proceeds support an incredible Toronto initiative:
Charlie's Freewheels is a community-based organization dedicated to empowering Toronto's youth through hands-on learning and the promotion of sustainable transportation. We do this by providing them with free bicycles and teaching them how to repair them and ride safely. Charlie’s FreeWheels is a registered charity that relies on donations to offer our programs free of charge.
About your hosts:
Gaurav Dhama is our comedy and event production expert. He also cares about climate change and degrowth.
Kiera Taylor founded the Ivey Degrowth Club at Western University, and does other stuff now. One time she did stand up.
Eric Miller is an ecological economist with big feet and a relatively small ecological footprint. He assumes he's funny.
Vlad Bunea makes video essays about what is wrong in capitalism and how we must transition to degrowth. And he will make you laugh.
