About Event

A talk from B. Scot Rousse, hosted on the Human Flourishing Floor. Come join for some light nihilistic and technological philosophy!

We are told the danger of AI is that it will steal our autonomy. But who cares about autonomy if nothing feels especially worth doing in the first place? What if the real issue is not that machines are taking over our choices, but that many of our choices already feel thin, weightless, oddly optional? Today’s AI intensifies our existential drift with a user-friendly interface.

With life becoming ever more optimized, automated, and frictionless, the question of what is actually worth caring about starts to feel strangely abstract. “Brain rot,” doomscrolling, ironic detachment, and the fantasy of “autocomplete for life” are part and parcel of this broader cultural mood, a strange mixture of disorientation, anxiety, and bemusement.

Enter Ballerina Cappuccina and her delirious AI-generated entourage. Sharks in sneakers and flying crocodiles spewing non-sensical, self-referential slogans in Italian. Hyperactive absurdity on loop. The absurd laughter is real. And yet beneath the nonsense is a queasy suspicion: that the grown-up world is brittle, over-engineered, and not especially convincing. Today’s brain rotters may be cultivating superficiality out of profundity. The irony emerges from the depths. It is response to a world that reveals itself as chaotic, optimized to death, and curiously hard to inhabit.

This talk explores the strange mood at the intersection of AI, nihilism, and care, and asks a simple, slippery question: in an age of intelligent machines and infinite “content,” can we recover the capacity to give a damn?
