All Things Urban Istanbul Workshop: Istanbul Beyond Landmarks
Exploring Istanbul Through Urbanists' Eyes
What if you had to introduce Istanbul without mentioning the Bosphorus, Galata Tower, or the Maiden's Tower?
How would you describe the city to someone visiting for the very first time?
Most cities are presented through their landmarks, skylines, and postcard views. But for the people who live in them, cities are something entirely different.
They're the café where you always end up after work, the street you avoid, the park where you clear your mind, the ferry ride you never get tired of, and the unexpected places that slowly become part of your everyday life.
🌆This workshop invites you to rediscover Istanbul through those everyday experiences.
About the Workshop
Join All Things Urban Istanbul at Postane, a historic post office transformed into a vibrant community space, for an evening of conversations, collective mapping, and collaborative storytelling as we explore what a city looks like when its landmarks disappear.
We'll begin by getting to know one another over tea and coffee before creating a collective map of Istanbul through our own lived experiences.
🧭Together, we'll map the places where we feel at home, where we find inspiration, where we meet friends, where we slow down, the places we'd rather leave as quickly as possible, and much more.
As our map begins to take shape, we'll step back and ask:
What kind of Istanbul emerges? Which stories become visible? And if this map were someone's first introduction to Istanbul, what kind of city would they discover?
💡Using the collective map as inspiration, participants will then work in small groups to develop an alternative narrative for Istanbul by proposing a new way of introducing the city beyond its landmarks.
Together, we'll explore how everyday experiences, memories, encounters, and routines can become a different language for representing the city and imagining a new urban identity.
During the workshop, you'll:
• Meet fellow urbanists from different urban disciplines
• Create a collective map of Istanbul through lived experiences
• Exchange stories, memories, and perspectives
• Co-create a new narrative for Istanbul beyond its landmarks
