Social Media Safety and the Unplug project

Evan Lombardi will discuss with us the impacts social media algorithms on people's mental health and how AI and manipulative algorithms are perpetuating it further.

​The presentation will give an overview of how recommendation systems affect mental health; survey current AI manipulation online; unpack common dark patterns (roach motel, confirmshaming, deceptive UI); and review scams, deepfakes, explicit/extremist content, and the mis/dis/malinformation ecosystem, grounding discussion in the Cambridge study Algorithms, Addiction, and Adolescent Mental Health. It will close with an explanation of what is the Unplug Project.

Evan Lombardi viendra présenter les impacts des algorithmes des médias sociaux sur la santé mentale et la façon dont l’IA et certaines interfaces manipulatrices amplifient ces effets.

​La présentation offrira: un survol des liens entre systèmes de recommandation et bien-être; un survol des manipulations par l’IA; une explication de motifs d’interface trompeurs (dark patterns) — piège à engagement (roach motel), confirmshaming, UI trompeuse; ainsi qu’un aperçu des arnaques, deepfakes, contenus explicites/extrémistes et de l’écosystème de mésinformation, désinformation et malinformation. La discussion s’appuiera sur l’étude de Cambridge Algorithms, Addiction, and Adolescent Mental Health. La séance se conclura par une présentation du projet Unplug.
