About Event

As soon as one slam is over, we begin again. We have an endless supply of stories to tell.

When I was getting this post ready, I searched for icons I could use for my custom section dividers. I design themed dividers for every slam. It delights me to adorn the posts this way. But when I entered “disability icons” in an online search, you know what I got.

Wheelchairs. Lots of wheelchairs that are supposed to represent all disability. Visible and not. There are disabilities that aren’t obvious. I’ve had a couple of those in my lifetime. They’re not obvious until they are.

The disabilities some of us navigate are often hidden and some are right out there for all to see. Each come with their own challenges.

In our culture, disabilities can cause separation. They “other” us by their nature and other people’s fears and discomfort with the unfamiliar.

I named this event “Who You Calling Disabled?” because the disabled people I know are some of the best examples of champion human beings and are quite able in all kinds of ways, practical and magical.

‘Different” doesn’t mean less than or better than. It just means different.
