Member screening - Lakota Nation vs. United States
NO RSVP NEEDED — MEMBER DROP-IN EVENT
Join us at Sansaar Books for a private member screening of Lakota Nation vs. United States, the 2022 documentary directed by Jesse Short Bull and Laura Tomaselli.
Lakota Nation vs. United States tells the story of the Lakota people’s fight to get back the Black Hills, land guaranteed to them by the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie and taken once gold was found there. In 1980, the Supreme Court ruled that the land had been taken illegally and ordered the U.S. to pay. The Lakota refused the money, because the Black Hills were never for sale, and they have kept refusing it ever since. With narration written and read by Oglala Lakota poet Layli Long Soldier, and directed in part by Oglala Lakota filmmaker Jesse Short Bull, the film covers 150 years of broken treaties and the movement for land back that continues today.
