Más allá de una sola fuente: Construyendo un futuro del agua diversificado y resiliente para la cuenca del río Tijuana/Beyond a Single Source: Building a Diversified and Resilient Water Future for the Tijuana River Watershed

in conjunction with 2026 San Diego Climate Week & México Por la Clima

Event Description:

The Institute of the Americas will convene the Tijuana River Watershed Solutions Forum on October 1, 2026, at CECUT in Tijuana under the theme “Beyond a Single Source: Building a Diversified and Resilient Water Future for the Tijuana River Watershed.” The forum will recognize the Rosarito desalination plant as a historic investment and examine how it can be complemented by water reuse, leakage reduction, wastewater treatment, conservation, and watershed protection. Ing. Rafael Zárate will share lessons from León, Guanajuato. The program will also showcase Binational Resilience Initiative projects and promote the technical, financial, and institutional cooperation needed to ensure that every new water supply is efficiently delivered, responsibly used, treated, and, wherever feasible, reused.

Why Attend?

  • Understand how the new Rosarito desalination plant can complement water reuse, conservation, infrastructure efficiency, and watershed protection.

  • Learn practical lessons from pioneering water-reuse programs in León and Oceanside that could inform future initiatives in Baja California.

  • Discover innovative projects addressing water quality monitoring, hydrological modeling, public education, and decentralized treatment.

  • Connect with public agencies, universities, businesses, nonprofits, philanthropies, and community leaders from both sides of the border.

  • Help shape a shared, actionable agenda for improving water security, public health, and environmental resilience throughout the Tijuana River Watershed.
