Geovation Ideathon
An ideathon with LSE Generate x Geovation
What could you build, change or solve if you could see where things happen, how places connect and how people interact with the world around them?
Join LSE Generate and Geovation for a hands-on Ideathon where university students use real location data from Ordnance Survey to tackle real-world challenges.
You'll get access to Ordnance Survey data and tools covering everything from buildings, roads and transport networks to green spaces, land use, addresses and geographical boundaries. You can also explore sample datasets including detailed information about buildings, addresses, postcodes and land use.
Then it's over to you. Working in a team, you'll explore an open-ended challenge, experiment with the data and turn what you discover into an idea before pitching it to the room.
You might explore questions like:
How could we make cities greener or healthier? Use data about parks, playing fields, allotments and other greenspaces to explore where access could be improved. OS Open Greenspace, for example, includes both greenspaces and their access points.
How could people move around cities better? Explore roads, paths and transport networks to rethink journeys, accessibility or connectivity.
Where could new services or businesses have the biggest impact? Combine information about places, buildings, addresses or land use with other datasets to spot patterns and opportunities.
How might we design better neighbourhoods? Explore how buildings, infrastructure, greenspace and transport interact to develop ideas for the places where we live, work and study.
What happens when you combine location data with data you already care about? Bring a problem or dataset from your own subject area and see what adding the dimension of place reveals.
You don't need to be a coder, geographer or data scientist. We're looking for curious students from any discipline who want to explore a problem, work with others and see where the data takes them.
How it works
Online induction | 23 November
Meet the Geovation team, get introduced to the Ordnance Survey data and tools you'll have access to, and get set up so you're ready to go on the day.
In-person Ideathon | 30 November, 3 to 6pm | Geovation, London
You'll have around two hours to work intensively on your challenge, with support from Geovation's tech and data experts, before pitching what you've discovered and the idea you've developed.
Open to students from any university and any discipline. No previous technical experience required.
