Academic Lecture: Modern and Contemporary Ink
This lecture features Wei Xiangqi, who holds a PhD in Art History and Theory and is a research curator at the National Art Museum of China.
Chinese painting underwent three major waves of transformation from tradition to modernity in the twentieth century. The first, during the New Culture Movement, saw artists engage with subjects drawn from contemporary life and introduce realist approaches to pictorial representation. The second, following the founding of the People’s Republic of China, centred on depicting the people and contributing to the construction of a modern nation-state. The third, during the era of reform and opening up, saw modern ink painting, with abstraction as its dominant visual mode, enter into dialogue with Western modern and contemporary art. Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, ink art has grown increasingly diverse in its visual language, concepts, meanings, and scope. The flourishing of New Gongbi and New Ink has given rise to a wide range of contemporary ink practices that are both locally rooted and international in outlook.
