Reclaiming the Digital Commons: Platform Accountability, Digital Authoritarianism & The Future of Independent African Infrastructure

​Across Africa, digital spaces have become vital arenas for civic participation, Gen Z movement organizing, and alternative expression. Yet these spaces are increasingly shaped by powerful global tech platforms, rising digital authoritarian practices, and fragile infrastructure systems that leave communities vulnerable.

​This dynamic satellite event hosted by Magamba Network, JamiiAfrica, Bloggers of Zambia & Baraza Media Lab at RightsCon 2026 explores the intersection of platform accountability, digital repression, and African-led digital infrastructure solutions. We’ll unpack how Big Tech shapes mis- and disinformation ecosystems, how governments deploy shutdowns and surveillance to restrict civic space, and how uneven access to infrastructure, including satellite services, impacts sovereignty and connectivity across the continent.
