DILATION
DILATION
DILATION is Neumann’s daily sonic practice of generating and attending to a set of finely tuned tones on his custom-built synthesizer. These sustained pitches—drones—are tuned to subjective resonances that emerge both in relation to the external environment—the physical space, its acoustics, and surroundings—and within an internal field between mind-space and felt vibration.
The tones are carefully calibrated to produce beating, interference patterns, and microtonal shimmering in the air, unfolding across multiple loudspeakers in the spatial sound system at Reforesters. Through these interactions, sound becomes materially active, articulating subtle fluctuations and spatial relations. Across six spring sessions, the work invites listening attention to oscillate between the perception of the tones as static and seemingly unchanging, and as continuously shifting, vividly vibrating phenomena—forming tangible, moving shapes in the air of the here and now.
This practice is a vibratory attempt to widen the present moment and make time itself be felt. The event will consist of a brief introduction followed by 30 minutes of sound for situated listening.
Led By: Daniel Neumann
Daniel Neumann is a sound artist, organizer and audio engineer. He holds a media art degree from the Academy of Visual Art Leipzig and studied electronic music composition. A main focus for him is how sound interacts with space and how space and spatial perception can be shaped by sound. He works in hybrid installation-performance formats and understands sound as an intersubjective field enabled by audio procedures.
His work has been presented internationally: Zona Maco CDMX, TEA Tenerife, Sinne Helsinki, Pinacoteca Bellas Artes Manizales Colombia, Espacios Resonantes Santiago de Chile, Loop Barcelona; Sculpture Center, etc. He is represented by Fridman Gallery New York. Curatorially he runs the series [New Ear:: SPATIAL] that presents spatial sound works.
As an audio engineer, he has been working for Diamanda Galás, BlankForms, Time:Spans, MoMA PS1, Meredith Monk, Kevin Beasley, Phill Niblock, Cecilia Vicuna, Torkwase Dyson, David Guetta, ACME, Alarm Will Sound and more.
