Speaker: Maxime Tousignant earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering in 2019. In 2021, he cofounded Smoothop, a non-profit organization dedicated to accelerating the socioecological transition. Smoothop was founded on the belief that the root causes of extreme socioeconomic inequalities and climate change are essentially bugs in the conventional economic system. As CTO of Smoothop, Maxime has since led the development and deployment of a working alternative economic platform based on the principles of a universal basic income (UBI): the Tôks System.

Description: Come talk about public interest technology, build community tools, and hear from fellow civic tech practitioners. Civic Tech Montréal is the Montréal chapter of the broader Civic Tech movement — dedicated to building resilient, sustainable, and community-driven solutions to civic problems. Everyone is welcome. We encourage everyone to come in person but do have a Zoom link available.

Our nights are informal and self-directed. Bring a laptop — we'll spend part of the evening working on active projects together, whether that's writing code, doing research, sketching a design, or drafting a proposal. If you've got an idea you've been sitting on, this is a great place to pitch it and find collaborators. If you just want to show up, listen, and see what people are working on, that's welcome too.

Most evenings include a short talk or presentation from someone in the civic tech, public interest tech, or open data space — followed by open working time and plenty of conversation. No experience required, and no specific skills needed. We're a mix of developers, designers, researchers, policy folks, and curious citizens.

Agenda:

6:30-6:50 Welcome and Introductions

6:50-7:20 Presentation and Q&A/discussion

7:20-8:30 Breakout groups - Bring a laptop, join a project, or pitch a project

Programme :

18 h 30 à 18 h 50 : Accueil et présentations

18 h 50 à 19 h 20 : Présentation et questions/discussion

19 h 20 à 20 h 30 : Ateliers en petits groupes
