About the panelists:
Dr. Habip Asan is the Director of the Division for Transition and Developed Countries at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) since April 2022. Prior to this, he served as the President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office for 14 years. He also worked as a Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Karadeniz Technical University in Turkey from 1994 to 2008. Throughout his career, Dr. Asan has held several key positions and appointments in the field of intellectual property. He has served as the Chairperson of the Technical and Operational Committee (TOSC) at the European Patent Office (EPO) from 2016 to 2022, the Chairperson of the EPO Academy in 2012, Co-Chairperson at the Turkish IP Academy Administrative Board from 2017 to 2022, President of TURKSME INC. Management Board from 2018 to 2022, President of Gebze IT Technological Development Zone Management Board from 2018 to 2022 and President, IP Specialized Commission of Devlopment Plan of Turkiye in 2018. He has also been a member of various boards and committees, including the Administrative Council of the EPO from 2008 to 2022, Board B28 of the EPO from 2014 to 2022, the IP Coordination Committee of Turkey from 2008 to 2022 and Turkish Design Council from 2008 to 2022. Dr. Asan has a Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Texas Tech University, USA.
Dr. Gaetano Dimita is a Reader in Interactive Entertainment and Intellectual Property Law at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary, University of London, where he focuses his research and teaching on Games and Interactive Entertainment Law. He is the founder and editor-in-chief of the Interactive Entertainment Law Review, Edward Elgar, the producer of the More Than Just a Game conference series; the co-author of Mastering the Game 2nd edition, WIPO, and a video games enthusiast.
Dr. Pieter GJ Koornhof is the Chief Operating Officer of 24 Bit Games, a video game development studio specialising in the porting and optimisation of video games. He holds a variety of degrees and professional accreditations in the field of law, economics and education. Most recently, he completed his doctorate on the regulatory framework for internet monopolies in competition law. He is a practicing attorney of the High Court of South Africa, having qualified in 2009. Pieter has taught at both South African and UK universities on undergraduate, postgraduate and MBA level. He has lectured and published in the fields of competition law, intellectual property law, ICT law, labour law and video games.
Rafael Ferraz Vazquez graduated in law from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil, and holds a Master in Intellectual Property and Information Society from the University of Alicante, Spain. He worked as a lawyer in Brazil where he advised on intellectual property issues to local and international companies. Rafael also collaborated with several international organizations such as the EUIPO. Since 2013 he works at the Copyright Law Division of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) where he participates in global policy discussions including on copyright and artificial intelligence.
Jakub Kubalski specialises in IP law, especially in gaming, advertising and marketing, film and television, and e-commerce. He also advises on consumer protection law and unfair competition. He represents clients before the common courts, public administration bodies (UOKiK, UKE, UODO), the Polish and European Patent Office and self-regulatory associations (including the Advertising Ethics Commission). He is a professional representative before the EUIPO. He lectures on computer games and e-sports law at the School of New Technologies Law, organised by the Hugo Grotius Intellectual Property Rights Centre.
