Research Saturday Week 3: ASR For African Languages

​This week at Research Saturday, we’ll be reviewing “Automatic Speech Recognition for African Low-Resource Languages: Challenges and Future Directions” by Sukairaj Hafiz Imam et al.

​The paper explores the key barriers and future possibilities in building ASR systems for Africa’s diverse and low-resource languages — from data scarcity and linguistic diversity to ethical data collection and open collaboration.

​Together, we’ll examine their findings, identify gaps in current ASR research, and discuss how the Datum Africa community can contribute to the future of speech technology for African languages.
