Research Saturday Week 3: ASR For African Languages
This week at Research Saturday, we’ll be reviewing “Automatic Speech Recognition for African Low-Resource Languages: Challenges and Future Directions” by Sukairaj Hafiz Imam et al.
The paper explores the key barriers and future possibilities in building ASR systems for Africa’s diverse and low-resource languages — from data scarcity and linguistic diversity to ethical data collection and open collaboration.
Together, we’ll examine their findings, identify gaps in current ASR research, and discuss how the Datum Africa community can contribute to the future of speech technology for African languages.
