Understanding Conflict Styles: Building Healthier Teams and Communities
Speaker: Dr. Jeanine Turner
Faculty, Discerning Leadership Program | Professor, Georgetown University
Conflict is inevitable in any team, organization, or community. But how we engage with conflict—our instinctive patterns and learned responses—shapes whether disagreement becomes destructive or leads to deeper understanding and growth.
Dr. Jeanine Turner will guide us through the landscape of conflict styles, helping participants recognize their own default approaches and understand how different styles interact in group dynamics. Drawing on communication research and practical experience with leadership teams, she'll show how awareness of conflict styles can transform difficult conversations into opportunities for collaboration.
Dr. Turner will explore:
The primary conflict styles and how to identify your own patterns
How different conflict styles complement—or clash with—each other in teams
Cultural dimensions that shape how we approach disagreement
Moving from avoidance or escalation toward productive engagement
Practical strategies for navigating conflict in mission-driven organizations
Creating team cultures where healthy disagreement strengthens relationships
This essential session equips leaders, facilitators, team members, and anyone navigating the challenges of working together across differences. Understanding conflict styles is foundational for discernment processes, collaborative leadership, and building resilient communities.
