Most founders know they should be building a personal brand. Then they open LinkedIn, see another carousel about "leveraging your authentic story," feel slightly unwell, and close the tab. The problem isn't that personal branding doesn't work - it's that most of what gets held up as personal branding is performative, cringeworthy, and sounds nothing like an actual person.
That's the ick. And it's optional. The founders whose brands actually open doors aren't the loudest ones or the ones posting daily motivational threads. They're the ones who can articulate what makes them distinctive, say it consistently in their own voice, and show up in a way that people remember and recommend - without ever feeling like they're performing a character.
