Thomas Pynchon's 1984 text asks what it really means to be a Luddite, from Ned Ludd, the apocryphal leader of the frame-breakers in the late 18th century, to Frankenstein, to the 'computer age' and the age of atomic warfare. Pynchon argues that the Luddites weren't anti-technology, just engaged in class warfare which challanged the dominance of new techologies in terms of labour exploitation and/or replacement.
