Future Fertility: Safely Recycling Human Waste (Fire Hall) with author John Beeby

Eat Local Nuts! (Pavilion): Black walnuts are very flavorful, grow abundantly in the Finger Lakes, and were an important traditional food, but cracking them can be a challenge.  Today black walnuts are often considered an inconvenience rather than a food-source, as most nut-crackers don't work well because the walnut husks are fleshy and the shells are very hard. This presentation demonstrates an effective hand-cracking technique to extract black walnuts as nutmeat quarters and sometimes halves, using a few simple inexpensive tools.

3PM – 4PM

Emergency preparedness: at home, in the car and on the go (Fire Hall): The Danby Volunteer Fire Department will lead a workshop on emergency preparedness, including what should go in an emergency pack for your home and your automobile and making an emergency plan with your family or housemates. They'll be on-site throughout the day with information about basic fire safety and emergency medical response, along with tours of the trucks, equipment demos, and activities and games for the whole family.

Make Your Own Herbal Medicines! (Pavilion): Suzanne Johnson will share the process of making "simplers" tincture herbal medicine. She would offer handouts about the process and ingredients, review and discuss each section and demo with an herb, as well as offer two handouts on two local herbs she loves, with properties and uses, for participants to consider making their first tinctures with.

4PM – 5PM

Community Open Mic  (Pavilion): This is a creative space to come together and share everyone’s talents. Bring a song to sing yourself or to lead the group, a poem to share, an instrument to play, anything goes!
