Unlocking Carbon Removal in the Mining Industry
Mining moves billions of tonnes of rock every year, some of which naturally locks away CO₂ as stable minerals. These waste materials provide a massive opportunity to remove atmospheric CO2 or store industrial CO2, and reduce environmental liabilities associated with mining operations.
Building carbon removal processes into existing operations could deliver durable carbon removal at significant scales, connecting critical minerals strategies, industrial waste management and national climate targets.
In this session, industry leaders, NGOs and market experts will discuss recent advances in deploying carbon removal within a mining context, alongside the challenges, including regulatory gaps and an emerging business case. This discussion will include examples of how to overcome these barriers, drawing on real examples of work on surficial mineralization enhanced rock weathering.
