Multisensory Meditations: Soundscapes of the Unseen
Qualia Contemporary Art cordially invites you to Multisensory Meditations: Soundscapes of the Unseen, a site-responsive performance exploring the liminal thresholds of human perception, taking place Saturday, October 31.
Led by composer and researcher, Walker Smith, alongside composer-pianist, Victor Xie, the project positions sound as a medium for psychological inquiry. The gallery functions as a reflective space where memory, shadow, and auditory phenomena converge.
Through spoken prompts, Smith introduces narrative and conceptual entry points that guide the listener's imagination toward internal landscapes. In response, Xie translates these trajectories at the piano through real-time improvisation, integrating spontaneous acoustics with field recordings and ambient space. The resulting dialogue considers how sound alters spatial awareness and reshapes perception within the context of the current exhibition.
Walker Smith
Walker Smith is a Stanford PhD candidate, composer, and, "musical chemist," exploring the intersection of sound, science, and meditation. As a Knight-Hennessy Scholar and Fulbright alum, Walker blends narration, music, and guided imagination in order to craft immersive, multi-sensory experiences.
Victor Xie
Victor Xie is a concert pianist, composer (NY Composer’s Circle), and Music Event Director at Qualia Contemporary Art. As an award-winning soloist and NEC/Mannes graduate, Victor specializes in cross-disciplinary performances ranging from classical programs to multimedia improvisations.
