About Event

Haemodialysis is a life-sustaining treatment, but behind every dialysis session is an interconnected engineering system that must operate safely and reliably.

This week, AfriqaLab takes a closer look at the engineering behind the artificial kidney, exploring how water-treatment infrastructure, reverse osmosis (RO), haemodialysis machines, sensors, pumps and monitoring systems work together to support safe dialysis operations.

Join us for a technical session examining the relationship between water quality and dialysis technology, the machine's blood and dialysate circuits, and the engineering considerations that influence equipment safety, reliability and maintenance in hospital renal units.

What we'll explore

  • Water treatment and reverse osmosis: Understanding pretreatment, water purification, distribution and the importance of water-quality monitoring.

  • Haemodialysis machine engineering: Exploring key subsystems, blood and dialysate circuits, pumps, sensors and alarms.

  • System integration and safety: Understanding how water-treatment infrastructure and dialysis machines work together, and why reliability matters.

  • Real-world engineering challenges: Discussing maintenance, fault recognition, contamination risks and safe escalation in hospital settings.

Meet the speaker

Engineer Julius Nganga is a Biomedical Engineering Technologist and Head of the Critical Care Section at KUTRRH. He oversees medical equipment management across Renal, Theatre, ICU, CTICU, NICU and PICU, with a focus on equipment safety, reliability and quality patient care.

Who should attend?

Biomedical engineering students, recent graduates and early-career biomedical engineers interested in medical equipment systems, renal technology, maintenance and healthcare technology management.

Come ready to learn, ask questions and deepen your understanding of the engineering systems behind life-sustaining renal technology.
