PROPOSED WORK
PROPOSED WORK by: Steve Ashby
“To look up is to breathe”
For this concert, I’ll be sharing compositions focused on the use of field recordings as their primary sonic material.
The works presented will move between sounds of South African, Scotland, the Reforester Farm and beyond to explore movement, depth, and complexity as elements move through the space. A key interest is the idea of the space between things. The experience will act as a pause in the sense of taking time to step back and listen, to consider the ephemeral nature of sound occurring and dissipating. An interval as timing and rhythm. An interaction of sounds moving through space to articulate the listening horizon.
Artist: Steve Ashby
Steve Ashby is a musician, composer, and sound artist who creates works around sound found in the natural and digital world to discover places of intersection which engage in the art of listening. Ashby’s work is a combination of field recordings, manipulated sound, and composed elements. With an interest towards sound ecology, Ashby listens for rhythms, melodies, and textures found in his surroundings to inform the direction of his work.
His artistic practices stems from lifelong study and performance as a musician that has extended into a practice of listening and the consideration for the ways in which sound shapes our experience and perception of the world. Ashby’s approach focuses on the creation of multi-channel sound works through the use of stochastic processes, data sonification, and interactive systems that explore sonic possibilities between environmental recordings and synthesized sound.
The development of these processes amplify the ever changing experience of our environment to engage with the sensual nature of sound that connects us to place. The works place a particular interest on developing a sense of space within the composed and performance space, and the perspectival possibilities the listeners bring to the work from their own life experiences and culture.
