Uncharted Lab: Make Your Impact Count in Performance Reviews
Communicate your contributions, demonstrate your growth, and advocate for what's next.
You've worked hard, solved difficult technical problems, delivered meaningful projects, and survived rounds of layoffs.
But will your performance review reflect the full value of your contributions?
Many engineers approach reviews by listing projects completed, tickets closed, and their technical accomplishments. Yet performance evaluations look beyond execution. They assess how effectively you've applied your capabilities to create value for the organization, relative to the expectations of your role.
At Senior, Staff, and Principal levels, understanding and communicating that value becomes increasingly important.
This Lab will help you prepare a stronger self-review and advocate for your continued growth.
Bring one meaningful contribution from your review cycle
Come prepared with a project, technical decision, leadership contribution, or improvement you've driven.
During the Lab, you'll use that example to:
Identify the skills and behaviors it demonstrates against your engineering career ladder.
Connect your work to its broader technical, organizational, and business impact.
Draft a stronger impact statement you can use in your self-review.
You'll also learn how to demonstrate your growth over the review cycle and advocate for what's next.
What we'll explore
We'll work through three essential aspects of performance review preparation:
Understand expectations: Use your engineering career ladder to identify what your current and next levels require.
Demonstrate your impact: Connect your accomplishments to technical, organizational, and business context so their value becomes clear.
Advocate for your growth: Show how you've developed, responded to feedback, and prepared for greater responsibility.
We'll also discuss why your review shouldn't be the first time you discover how others perceive your work, and how to make your preparation useful for future promotions and behavioral interviews.
You'll then apply these ideas to one of your own contributions.
We'll finish with group discussion and live coaching around your performance review challenges.
