Conversation on Ethics, Technology, and the Limits of Critique

​Join us at the Internet Archive Europe Space on 9 October at 18:00 for a conversation between Morgane Billuart and philosophers of technology Jordi Viader Guerrero and Darryl Cressman.

​The conversation takes The Heat of Others, Morgane Billuart’s novel, as a starting point for a broader discussion around technology, ethics, governance and the limits of critique. Set in an Arctic research facility dedicated to harvesting human body heat, the novel follows a young philosopher attending a conference on the ethics of mind enhancement technologies. While the book provides the initial point of departure, the discussion will move beyond the novel to ask a broader question: why has ethics become such a central framework through which technology is governed and legitimized?

​In recent years, and in response to the rapid developments in AI and emerging technologies, ethics boards, responsible innovation initiatives, AI ethics guidelines, and regulatory frameworks have become increasingly embedded in technological development. But what does it actually mean to make technology “ethical”? Can ethics meaningfully regulate the direction of technological development?

​Taking these questions as a starting point, Jordi Viader Guerrero and Darryl Cressman will examine what we mean when we speak about ethics in relation to technology and its recent history. What is ethics expected to do when it enters technological systems?
