Venture capital and the secondaries market in the Mideast
The venture capital story in the Mideast is young, but a raging one. Last year, we saw record venture capital funding going towards fintech, artificial intelligence, and enterprise software. And this year, we have seen the region’s first-ever VC secondaries fund come up, with Key Capital announcing a $50 million fund in partnership with SHUAA Capital.
But beneath these numbers, the industry is undergoing a whole host of changes. Basic parameters are evolving, and a new phase of maturity is setting in. There is also the Iran war that could introduce new filters in the industry and the overall fundraising processes.
That’s our upcoming discussion with Basil Moftah of Key Capital. Over the years, Basil has served as a general partner at multiple funds in the Middle East and North Africa region, the most recent being Egypt’s Nclude and the UAE-based Global Ventures.
