Fundamentals For Startups: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly About Non-Dilutive Funding

​About the Lecture:

​The most important job of a founder is getting your startup funded. Lots of the focus nowadays is on figuring out how to get money from private investors, typically venture capitalists. This talk will focus on another critical source of funds for many first-time founders — non-dilutive funding. We will do a quick survey of the sources of non-dilutive funding, discuss how it fits into a resilient capital strategy, and then do a deep dive on one of the biggest sources of non-dilutive funding in the US, the SBIR/STTR grant program, and how you can get started on your first grant.

Jared Silvia, partner, Gliding Ant Ventures

​Jared Silvia is an entrepreneur and business leader who builds climate-tech and deep tech companies and products. He is a Partner and Founder at Gliding Ant Ventures in Seattle, where he provides professional services and co-builds early-stage startups in the cleantech and deep tech sectors. He launched the SBIR Academy, an eight-week program that teaches deep tech founders how to apply for US SBIR awards, and created Deep Tech Dirt, an online resource and community that helps founders build their companies more effectively. Before this, he was CEO, Co-founder, and President of BlueDot Photonics, where he raised nearly $3 million in equity and non-dilutive funding and led the company's solar technology development. Earlier in his career, he served as an Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company, held product leadership roles at Doosan GridTech, and worked with electric utilities as a consultant at Sound Grid Partners. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from MIT, an MPhil in Chemistry from the University of Cambridge as a Winston Churchill Scholar, and B.S. degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Washington. He was named to the Puget Sound Business Journal 40 Under 40 in 2023.
