About Event

Unfortunately, this event has been postponed for now. We’re working on arranging a new date and will share details as soon as we can. Apologies for the disappointment and thanks for your understanding.

This series of field trips is being organised by Green Kite to help people connect with the many interesting environmental, biodiversity and community initiatives taking place around Dún Laoghaire.

Join Goat Herder, Hannah Miller, from the Old Irish Goat Society to learn about the conservation grazing project run in partnership with DLR County Council, and meet the goats helping to care for the landscape.

The goats are temporarily moved between different sites, including Killiney Hill, Fernhill and Rocheshill, where they naturally clear overgrown vegetation to help reduce wildfire risk without the use of chemicals or heavy machinery. Following a number of serious fires in recent years, the project is being piloted as part of a wider wildfire management plan and offers a nature-based solution for creating and maintaining firebreaks.

As well as helping reduce fire risk, the grazing helps stop goarse and dense scrub from taking over parts of the hill, creating space for a greater variety of native plants and wildflowers to grow. These habitats support pollinators, insects, birds and other wildlife, and help protect the biodiversity of this important coastal landscape.

During the visit, you’ll hear how conservation grazing works, why the project was introduced, and how the goats are helping to protect and restore this much-loved local landscape.
