Finance for 30x30 in the Coral Triangle: The Coral Triangle Conservation Fund & Marine Conservation Finance in the Philippines

The Coral Triangle is the global center of coral reef diversity and resilience and supports the livelihoods, food security, and coastal protection for millions of people. Marine protected and conserved areas are essential to achieve sustainable conservation of these vital ecosystems. This two-part session at the Ocean Pavilion explores how finance mechanisms including the Coral Triangle Conservation Fund can enable 30x30 in Coral Triangle.

Session 1: The Coral Triangle Conservation Fund: Saving Asia’s Resilient Reefs
1:00–1:45 pm

The Coral Triangle Conservation Fund (CTCF) is a new regional conservation trust fund designed to mobilize resources towards protecting, recovering, and sustaining the world’s most biodiverse marine region, the Coral Triangle. Created in partnership with the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF) its job is to raise, manage, and deploy lasting finance for the people and institutions conserving the region’s priority marine protected and conserved areas. After an introduction to the Fund, a panel will discuss how the CTCF can help countries meet CBD Target 3 and what the Fund needs to reach its financial goals. Panelists include CTI-CFF leadership, government representatives from across the Coral Triangle, a development finance partner, and coral reef conservation experts.

Speakers:

Dr. David Meyers, Executive Director, Conservation Finance Alliance, Secretary/Treasurer of the CTCF

Christovel Rotinsulu, Deputy Executive Director of Program Services, CTI-CFF

Klaus Prochaska, Senior Financial Sector Specialist, Asian Development Bank

Rosalie Masu, Solomon Islands Ocean Advisor, Wildlife Conservation Society

Ahmad Sofiullah, Team Leader for Convention and Ocean Accounting, Directorate of Ecosystem Conservation, MMAF Indonesia

The session will start with a presentation of the Conservation Finance Alliance’s new program of support funded by Bloomberg Ocean Fund that will be followed by a short panel of practitioners and government leaders working towards this goal.
