SESSION 9

De-Risking Your Company

Structure, strategy & building a venture designed to last

Most startups don't fail because the idea was bad. They fail because the structure was wrong — the wrong entity, the wrong agreements, the wrong governance, the wrong risk posture. By the time most founders discover this, it's expensive to fix and sometimes legally complicated to undo.

The final session of The Psychology of Startups: Building Something Meaningful is a capstone and a call to action. We cover everything that holds a startup together when the journey gets hard: how to choose the right corporate entity for your stage and geography, the legal foundations checklist that every investor expects to see before due diligence begins, a live risk mapping exercise built around your actual venture, and a 90-day sprint plan you'll leave with in hand.

This is also the session where we close the loop on the full series — returning to the WHY you articulated in Session 1 and asking whether the system you've built is still in service of the reason you started.

Led by Morné Maritz, who has navigated entity structuring across Australia and the US, filed patent applications, built complex advisor and employment agreements, and manages an active global team — every scenario on this risk register is one he has lived.

✅ What You'll Learn

  • Which corporate structure is right for your stage and geography: Pty Ltd, LLC, or Delaware C-Corp — and when to flip

  • The 5 legal documents every early-stage startup must have before they raise a single dollar

  • How to build a Risk Matrix (Likelihood × Impact) specific to your venture — and actually use it to make decisions

  • What a governance framework looks like at pre-seed, and how to evolve it as you scale

  • Your personalised 90-day de-risk sprint: three priority rocks, clear milestones, and an accountability structure you'll actually follow

  • How to close the loop on your founder WHY — and why returning to it at the end is as important as finding it at the beginning
